Dear Ms. is a compelling HBO documentary series that dives into the origins of Ms. magazine and its radical impact on American discourse. Featuring Gloria Steinem and the original staff, the three-part series explores how the publication brought “taboo” topics like domestic violence and reproductive rights into the mainstream.
My vision for the project was deeply rooted in the source material; I pitched a grounded direction where the show’s graphics were woven directly into the magazine’s iconic original spreads. When it came to housing the archival footage, I went with a practical, immersive solution: using period-accurate televisions and interior sets to ground the viewer in the 1970s. We closed the sequence with a powerful, slow-push shot on the influential book covers that ultimately forged the feminist manifesto.
